Maldives is a cluster of 1190 coral islands in a double chain of 26 natural ring-like atolls, which spread over 90,000 square kilometers. These islands are embedded in the heart of the Indian Ocean, where the reefs of the islands are alive with an uncountable number of different types of underwater creatures and vivacious corals which protect the islands from wave action of the surrounding water bodies. The atolls are mainly composed of live coral reefs and sand bars that rise abruptly from the depths of the India Ocean and runs north to south. These atolls are formed from coral structures, separated by lagoons. The atolls are in fact a part of a greater structure called Laccadives-Chagos Ridge, which stretches over 2000 kilometers.
No more than 200 islands are inhabited whereas the rest includes tourist resorts and uninhabited islands. None of these islands are more than six feet above sea level and they lie 73 degrees east Equator. The capital Male’ is located in the middle of the atoll chain, which is the busiest island buzzing with exciting activities of about 75,000 people which is one third of the population of this country. The Republic of Maldives witnesses the combination of striking beaches, crystal clear waters and the beautiful blue sky which makes the whole ambiance tranquil and calm.
